Generic Research Summation
In my research I have found that music videos have many codes and conventions, such as:
- a range of different shot types
- more than on location
- close ups of the artist - Andrew Goodwin's theory
- subtle intertextuality referencing for example films or movements etc
- a colour scheme
- focus on costumes
- lighting to enhance meaning within the video
- focus on performance over narrative structures
As well as this, music artist's websites contain codes and conventions such as:
- moving image
- same typography throughout
- clear colour scheme
- simplistic layout
- references to newest album/song through images
- links to social media
- online store
- easy navigation
- recognisable branding showing media convergence
I will use these codes and conventions in my music video and website such as:
- a focus on the star, including many close ups relating to Andrew Goodwin's theory
- intertextual references to the suffragette movement through found footage and protest signs with lyrics on them relating to Andrew Goodwin's theory, references to films such as Clueless which the song 'Just a Girl' is used in, and homages to Bob Dylan's 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' through the lyrics on signs, from this research I have also decided to include small intertextual references in the background of my video
- I intend to have a focus on costume as it is a big part of a music video
- my music video will consist of mainly performance sequences with a small narrative aspect fitting in with the codes and conventions of the music videos I have looked at
- my website will have a clear branding that fits with the music video and band, I will achieve this by taking stills of production and have a photoshoot of the band in their costumes to put on the website to have a consist identity across all platforms
- I will create a social media for the band which will be used as another platform frothier music and to express their views and ideologies similar to the website
- the pages of the website will consist of the homepage, the video, the online store, and extra news
